The first time

There’s a first time for everything. First times get more and more rare as grow old. We’ve experienced a lot of what we’re likely to experience, and tried a lot of things we said we would try. But new beginnings and wonders are happening around us everyday.

Last week I was in Poland and I saw snow fall.

I can’t even remember when or if I saw snow fall. If I did it was a long long time ago. The joys of spending my life in hot countries like Australia and Israel for most of my life.

I’ve barely seen snow just lying there on a tree or a mountain in real life. Maybe 10 times. So seeing some snow fall next to the hut where I was staying in Poland was pretty special.

But today was something different.

I’m in Berlin, my home for the last few months. And I woke up to see a windy snowy day outside. Maybe not a snowstorm, but heavy snow was certainly falling. I knew that this was no day to work at home. So I tucked myself into the café under my house and looked out the big windows facing the street.

While munching on a croissant and drinking a boiling hot green tea, I was looking outside. In a span of 20 minutes, the snow and wind got heavier and heavier. The people outside were walking backwards because it was so intense.

And in the meanwhile, my street, which I’ve known intimately for a long while now, completely changed its appearance. That was a big new experience for me. My home transforming its appearance like that because of snow… My street dressing up in white 🙂

I may be 32 (almost 33) but I’ve ever had that experience. It was a new one. And all I had to do was just to be there and look. Be in the right place, in the right time, and enjoy the little moments in life.

I wonder how many amazing little things like that happen around me, every day, for the first time. What do I miss by not observing? What are you? 🙂

Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.
